> Liberating Life: The Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra recounts how the Elder Jalavāhana rescued ten thousand fish, and the devaputras requited his virtue; this is its origin. Master Zhizhe purchased the Liang weir and put an end to fishing and netting along the river; this established the regulation. Rescuing Ji Xu from his peril in prison, and repaying the debt of gratitude above the Meditation Hall: these are manifest proofs (these three events are all found in the Annals of Zhizhe). In the second year of the Qianyuan era of Emperor Suzong of the Tang, an imperial decree ordered the establishment of eighty-one life-liberating ponds throughout the empire (Yan Zhenqing composed the stele). In the first year of the Tianxi era of Emperor Zhenzong of the present dynasty, an imperial decree reinstated the life-liberating ponds of the empire, prohibiting catching and fishing for five leagues up and down the rivers across the prefectures and commanderies of the Yangtze and Huai rivers (these two events are detailed in the Treatise on Prosperity and Decline). Ciyun petitioned to make the West Lake a life-liberating pond, gathering the people of the commandery on the eighth day of the fourth month to release fish and birds. Fazhi released fish and birds at South Lake on the Buddha's birthday to pray for the longevity of the sage emperor; Privy Councillor Liu Jun was ordered by imperial decree to compose the stele. These all represent the broad outline of liberating life.
