> The commentary says: To incur the retribution of the Avīci \[hell\] merely for things that are not urgent—such is worldly people's eating of the five pungent roots! Today the masters of various schools mostly neglect this matter; how distressing! In ancient times, Zha'an ate only the three whites precisely to avoid this transgression; it was by no means an intentional display of eccentric conduct. Having composed this text, indignant at those of the present day who claim to know the Dharma, I made this vow: May the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and celestial immortals of the ten directions hear my prayer and all rise up to grant their protective aid. May the Dharma gates of the three traditions—the Chan groves, the doctrinal schools, and the Vinaya courtyards—whether masters or companions, all know to mindfully protect the pure precepts; not planting the foul-smelling herbs of onions and scallions in pure monasteries; not blending the foul odors of onions and scallions into pure vegetarian offerings; and not eating the impure food of onions and scallions with a pure bodily vessel. One must realize that if both person and place are not pure, then in any place of vegetarian fasting, precepts, dhyāna recitation, or Dharma rites, how could one still move the Buddhas and heavenly beings and bring down the spirits? How could one avert calamities and summon auspiciousness? How could one stir the unseen realms and deliver those who are sunk in delusion? I pray that throughout the entire world, within the vegetarian kitchens of all Buddhist monasteries and Daoist temples, onions and scallions are not used to flavor communal food nor boiled and eaten in private. Whenever officials' residences hold vegetarian retreats and Daoist offerings, let them strictly prohibit and cease \[their use\] ten days in advance, not treading in illegality. When monks and Daoists go out to accept vegetarian offerings in lay households, they must constantly examine themselves, never eating them intentionally or accidentally to bring defilement upon themselves. May the minds of people mutually exhort one another to jointly exalt the sage's path! This will bring about purity and strict reverence in serving the Buddha and serving Heaven, and both personal practice and converting others will be benefited. Do not forget the origin of today's vow! I prostrate myself before the Buddha-eye to illuminate it and Heaven's mind to oversee it, resolving upon strict prohibition to escape bitter retribution.
