> Mourning Garments: In the Buddhist discourses on mourning garments, the Nirvāṇa \[Sūtra\] and the various Vinayas contain no such system. When Master Zhi\[yi\] was nearing death, he admonished: 'Worldly weeping and mourning garments must not be adopted at all.' Now, examining Master \[Hui\]yuan's Mourning Rites, it states: 'The upādhyāya from whom one received the profession is treated the same as one's parents: both are mourned for three years. If it is an ācārya one relied upon, one temporarily wears mourning garments following the master's passing.' Master Ying's Wushan ji states: 'Garments for mourning a master should only be made of cloth, somewhat coarse, dyed purely in yellowish-brown (based on this, the use of white cloth was never permitted).'
