> Earlier, the son of Empress Lü was Crown Prince. His Majesty favored Ruyi, the son of Consort Qi, and had previously wished to replace the prince. Marquis of Liu Zhang Liang remonstrated, but was not heeded. Empress Lü pressed Liang to devise a plan. Liang said: "There are four men whom His Majesty has been unable to summon." He then instructed the Crown Prince to draft letters with generous gifts to invite them. When His Majesty held a banquet and set out wine, the Crown Prince attended, and the four men followed him, their beards and eyebrows snowy white and their robes and caps exceptionally dignified. His Majesty was greatly astonished, and said to the four men: "I am fortunate that you will ultimately protect and nurture the Crown Prince." He summoned Consort Qi and said to her: "Those four men assist him; his plumage is already complete." In the end, he did not replace the Crown Prince. This was originally due to the power of the Marquis of Liu in inviting these four men. (The \*Records of Chenliu\* state: Duke Dongyuan, named Tang Xuanming, resided in an orchard; Master Xiahuang, named Cui Shaotong, lived in seclusion in Xia village; Master Jueli, named Zhou Yuandao, and Qiliji, whose surname is unknown, avoided the Qin turmoil and lived in seclusion in Mount Shang, called the Four White-Heads. \*Jue\* \[角\] is pronounced \*lu\* \[祿\].) ○ Zhang Liang, a native of Han, once strolled on the bridge at Xiapi. (\*Pi\* \[邳\] is pronounced \*pi\* \[丕\]; \*yi\* \[圯\] is pronounced \*yi\* \[怡\]; the people of Chu call a bridge an \*yi\*.) An old man dropped his shoe below the bridge, looked at Liang, and had him go down to retrieve it. The old man took it with his foot and went away. After going about a \*li\*, he returned and said: "You, young lad, can be taught!" Producing a scroll of a book, he said: "Read this, and you shall become the teacher of kings. In thirteen years, see me below Mount Gucheng in Jibei; the Yellow Stone is me." When morning came, he examined the book: it was Grand Duke's Art of War. Later, accompanying the Emperor through Jibei, he indeed saw the Yellow Stone below Mount Gucheng, took it, and treasured and worshipped it. (\*Bao\* \[葆\] is the character \*bao\* \[寶, treasure\].) The Marquis of Liu said: "My family served as chancellors to Han for generations; when Han was destroyed, I did not begrudge a fortune of ten thousand pieces of gold to seek revenge for Han, shaking the tyrannical Qin and the entire realm. Now, with a three-inch tongue, I have become teacher to an emperor, enfeoffed with ten thousand households and ranked among the nobility; for a commoner, this is the utmost, and for me, Liang, it is enough. I wish to abandon human affairs, and desire only to roam with Master Red Pine." He thereupon studied grain avoidance and guiding breath to lighten his body. (\*Pi\* \[辟\] is pronounced \*bi\* \[壁\]; \*dao\* \[道\] is the same as \*dao\* \[導, guiding\].)
