> In the first year of Shiyuan, Su Dan, a native of Chen, moved the divine immortals, and they transmitted Daoist arts to him. One day, he suddenly swept and sprinkled the courtyard steps, saying, 'My immortal companions have arrived!' Presently, purple qi billowed, and several tens of white cranes arrived, congregated, and transformed into people whose celestial robes were dazzling and beautiful. Dan entered and informed his mother, saying, 'Dan must become a divine immortal and cannot support you to the end of your life.' He thereupon left a chest, saying, 'Whenever you lack anything, you may knock on it.' He also said, 'Next year there will be an epidemic in the commandery; you may take water from the well in front of the courtyard and orange leaves to rescue people, which will slightly provide you with delicious nourishment.' Having spoken, he ascended to heaven. The next year, there was indeed a great epidemic. The common people competed to go to the mother, and she rescued them according to the method, and all were healed. Whenever she was in want, she knocked on the chest, and the items arrived immediately. Three years later, the mother grew suspicious, unlocked it, and looked inside; a pair of cranes flew away, and knocking on it yielded no further response. Later, a crane came and perched upon the tower of the commandery wall. A youth shot at it with a pellet bow, whereupon it scratched characters into the wooden planks of the tower with its claws, which read: 'The wind blows whistling, the rain falls bleakly; / The city walls remain, but the people are changed. / After three hundred sexagenary cycles, I am made to return; / I am Su Dan—why shoot at me with a pellet?'
