Fond of Daoist arts, he entered the mountains with three disciples to compound an elixir. When the elixir was completed, he ingested it first and immediately died. His disciple Yu Sheng said, 'Our master was no ordinary man; if he ingested the elixir and died, there must be a reason for it.' He also ingested the elixir and died. The remaining two disciples doubted and did not ingest it; they left the mountain to seek coffins. Boyang immediately arose, took Yu Sheng, and both departed as immortals. Meeting someone entering the mountain to cut timber, he wrote a letter to express his gratitude to the two disciples. Boyang composed the \*Cantong qi\* in three scrolls, categorized under five sections. Its exposition seems to explain the \*Zhouyi\*, but it borrows hexagrams and lines to discuss the compounding of the elixir.
