> In the third year, the Parthian monk An Shigao had a fellow student who died and became the deity of Lake Gongting (Gong is pronounced like gong \[恭\]; it is Lake Pengli, belonging to Nankang). He could cause passing boats to have the wind divided for ascending and descending \[the lake\]. When Shigao reached the shrine, the deity said to him, 'My home governs this lake for a thousand li. Because of past generosity, I now have abundant treasures; but because of excessive anger, I have now received the body of a python. Please take my silks and treasures to build a stupa for me, praying for birth in a good realm.' Shigao thereupon established a monastery and built a stupa in Yuzhang. Later, the python died in the mountains, its head and tail spanning several li (now Da'an Monastery).
