> In the second year of Heqing, an imperial edict summoned Master Huizang to lecture on the Avataṃsaka Sūtra (the sixty-fascicle version translated in the Jin) in the Taiji Hall. Earlier, Sun Jingde had made a statue of Avalokiteśvara. Later, he committed an offense punishable by death. In a dream, a monk taught him that reciting a scripture could deliver him. Once awake, he completed a thousand recitations. When he approached the execution ground, the executioner's blade broke three times. The officer in charge reported this, and an edict was issued pardoning him. Upon returning home, he saw three blade marks on the neck of the statue. This scripture was then propagated and titled the Gaowang Avalokiteśvara Sūtra.
