> After the Tathāgata entered extinction, three leaders of the assemblies were established in the Pippala Cave to compile the Tripiṭaka: Ānanda recited the Sūtra Piṭaka, Kāśyapa recited the Abhidharma Piṭaka, and Upāli recited the Vinaya Piṭaka. This was the Sthaviravāda (Elder) school. There was further another thousand worthy and noble ones who ordered Vaṣpa to compile \[the teachings\] outside the cave, named the Mahāsāṃghika (Great Assembly) school. These two schools are together referred to as the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya; this is the fundamental basis (the \*Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya\*; this text divides the Tripiṭaka under three section heads, which is what Hīnayāna sets forth).
