> In the eighth year, Tripiṭaka Master Amoghavajra of Northern India arrived at the capital via the South Sea, and at Ci'en Monastery was transmitted the Great Yoga Dharma by Vajrabodhi. In the fifth month, many people in the capital suffered from pestilence. The King of Physicians, Old Master Wei, distributed medicine to rescue them, and none failed to recover. The master constantly harbored the aspiration in his mind that anyone who saw him would have their illness cured. When the Emperor heard of this, he summoned him to an audience, treated him with ritual courtesy, and regarded him as the Bodhisattva Bhaiṣajyarāja. The Old Master was a man of the state of Kashgar in the Western Regions; he constantly wore a coarse wool robe, hung several hundred gourds from his waist, wore a gauze headscarf, and held a goosefoot staff, with a black dog accompanying him. He said of himself that he had lived for five hundred years, across Yao, Shun, Tang of Yin, Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang, having transformed his body seven times to come rescue the poor and sick. One day, his dog transformed into a black dragon, carried the Old Master on its back, and shot up into the sky, departing.
