- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [40.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2035.40.23)

> The commentary says: Where does the Buddha's way lie? It must be manifested through monasteries, scriptures, images, and the assembly of monks upholding the Dharma; only then can the transformation of purity and compassion be carried out. Chong did not know this path, and moreover relied solely on empty principle to adorn his narrow views. Thus, when he was in power, he banned the ordination of monks, the creation of monasteries, the casting of Buddhas, and the copying of scriptures; when he was on his deathbed, he issued a testamentary decree warning his sons not to conduct Buddhist services. Had he obtained a ruler like Emperor Taiwu of the Northern Wei to indulge his stubborn and biased will, he would have been another Cui Hao of his time, coming to an ill end.
