> In the eighth month, an imperial decree conferred the posthumous title King Wenxuan upon Confucius, seating him facing south and performing the shidian sacrifice with the palace hanging of bells and chimes (The Liji says: 'Whenever a school is established, the shidian sacrifice must be made to the former sages and former teachers.' The commentary states: 'Shidian means offering foods and pouring libations. The former sages and former teachers are the Duke of Zhou and Confucius.' The Zhouli says: 'The king uses the palace hanging; the feudal lords use the xuan hanging.' The commentary states: 'Palace hanging means bells and chimes suspended from stands on all four sides; the feudal lords omit one side. The bell has the tone of gong, symbolizing the ruler. Bells hung on the stand are termed xian, pronounced xuan.'). Yanzi was enfeoffed as Duke of the State of Yan, and all the disciples were posthumously enfeoffed as dukes, marquises, and counts.
