> In the second year, an imperial decree instructed the grand councilors and high ministers to begin building Halls of Merit. When Du Hongjian first pacified Bashu, he dispatched an envoy to Baiya to invite Chan Master Wuzhu to enter the city and enquire about the Way. The Master said: 'Whatever meets the eye is Suchness.' From this, Hongjian set his heart on the joy of Chan. In his later years he entered the grand council, but retired due to illness. Facing death, he bathed, ordered his court robes to be placed beneath a saṅghāṭī, shaved his beard and hair, bid farewell to the assembly, and passed away. His body was cremated according to the monastic regulations. Dharma Master Fazhao saw five-colored clouds inside his alms bowl at Yunfeng Monastery on Mount Nanyue, and saw a monastery in a mountain ravine by a stone gate with a sign reading 'Monastery of the Great Sage Bamboo Grove.' He then set out with companions of like mind to visit Mount Wutai, where he saw golden gates and towers exactly as he had seen in his bowl. Entering the monastery and reaching the lecture hall, he saw Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra seated separately preaching the Dharma to tens of thousands of bodhisattvas. The Master stepped forward and made obeisance, asking: 'In the end times, what is the most essential cultivation?' Mañjuśrī said: 'Among all gates of cultivation, none equals the recollection of the Buddha.' The Master took his leave and bowed; when he raised his head, everything had vanished. He then built a monastery at the place of the vision, calling it Bamboo Grove.
