> In the seventh year, Zhao Bian, Junior Mentor of the Crown Prince, who had long been a transcendent friend of Chan Master Faquan, inquired about the essentials of mind from Chan Master Chongyuan (who resided at Tianbo and was a Dharma heir of Chan Master Huai of Tianyi) when he governed Qingzhou. Once, leaning on a table in the public hall with his mind calm as still water, he suddenly heard a crash of thunder and had a great, sweeping awakening. Raising his head to look at the void, there was no place in all realms and dust-motes that was not it. Later he retired from office and returned to Quzhou, building a high studio to reside in, associating with eminent monks and recluses. In the eighth month of this year, a great star fell in his courtyard. In the morning, the duke spoke with his son Xiang as usual, then suddenly sat cross-legged and passed away (Su Zizhan composed his spirit-path stele; also seen in the Pudeng lu). ○ Duke Jing, Wang Anshi, requested that his garden residence in Jiangning Prefecture be turned into a Buddhist monastery, and it was bestowed the plaque 'Baoning Chan Cloister'. Earlier, Anshi's son Pang was wicked and sinister by nature. When his father was in the government, all policies that misled the state and harmed the people were in fact instigated by Pang. After he died, Anshi indistinctly saw him wearing an iron cangue, crying out to his father to seek the Buddha's rescue. Anshi was terrified, and hastily established the monastery to pray for his release from suffering.
