> In the seventh year, in the second month, Chan Master Huiyuan of Lingyin entered for an audience at the Xuande Hall. The Emperor said, "How does one escape birth and death?" He replied, "Without awakening to the Great Vehicle, one will never be able to escape." The Emperor said, "How does one attain awakening?" He replied, "The fundamentally existing nature, polished through the years, will naturally attain awakening." The Emperor said, "What happens after awakening?" He replied, "Only after awakening does one know that today's questions and answers are all entirely wrong." The Emperor said, "What happens after everything is not \[it\]?" He replied, "Shedding the body, it appears before you, with no further visible marks." The Emperor experienced an insight and nodded in approval.
