> The Fifth Patriarch, the Venerable Dhītika, was a man of the country of Mathurā. Earlier, when Upagupta's karmic conditions for transforming beings were nearing their end, he went to the house of Dhītika's father, an elder. \[The elder\] asked, 'Why does the Great Sage travel alone?' Upagupta answered, 'I am one who has left home and have no attendant. If there is someone, please bestow your kindness.' The elder replied, 'If I later have a son, I will certainly offer him to you.' Later he had a boy, named Dhītika, who was adept at studying the sūtras and treatises. \[Upagupta\] went to claim him, took him to the monastery, and ordained him as a monk. When he reached the age of twenty, he conferred the full precepts upon him. On the first day, he severed the fetters of seeing the truths and attained the srotāpanna stage. At the first karmavācanā, he attenuated lust, anger, and delusion, and obtained the sakṛdāgāmin stage. At the second karmavācanā, his fetters of the desire realm were exhausted, and he attained the anāgāmin stage. At the third karmavācanā, he severed the defilements of the three realms at once, established pure conduct, and became an arhat. His three knowledges shone far and wide, and he was complete with the six supernatural penetrations; he traveled about, appearing and disappearing, with ease and without hindrance. Upagupta said to him, 'The time of my nirvāṇa has arrived. I take this Dharma-treasure and entrust it to you; you must disseminate it.' Later Dhītika transformed and liberated the world, and entered nirvāṇa in Central India. Devas and humans were deeply moved with grief; they gathered his relics and erected a stupa on Mount Pañca (from the \*Fu fazang jing\*).
