> In the first year of the Qianfeng era of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang, the Emperor visited Bozhou to pay respects to Lord Lao and conferred upon him the honorable title of Xuanyuan Huangdi (Emperor of Profound Origin), and named the Holy Mother the Xiantian Taihou (Empress Dowager of Prior Heaven). In the twenty-ninth year of the Kaiyuan era of Emperor Xuanzong, His Majesty dreamed of Emperor of Profound Origin, sent an envoy to obtain his image, and installed it in the Xingqing Palace; he ordered that his true likeness be painted and installed in the Kaiyuan Daoist temples across all commanderies, and decreed that shrines to Emperor of Profound Origin be erected in all commanderies. In the first year of the Tianbao era, Lord Lao descended at the Danfeng Gate and instructed Tian Tongxiu to memorialize the throne requesting that an excavation be made at the old residence of Magistrate Yin to unearth a golden coffer with numinous talismans to protect the state; the reign era was thereupon changed to Tianbao. In the second year, the title of Great Sagely Ancestor Emperor of Profound Origin was conferred on Lord Lao. In the seventh year, the title of Sagely Ancestor Great Dao Emperor of Profound Origin was conferred on Lord Lao. In the thirteenth year, the title of Great Sagely Ancestor High Sovereign Great Dao Golden Gate Emperor of Profound Origin Heavenly Emperor was conferred on Lord Lao. Emperor Xizong decreed that the Xuanzhong Monastery of Lord Lao in Chengdu be renamed the Qingyang Palace; as the fields near the palace were mostly planted with scallions and garlic, whose rank stench steamed and wafted, he granted funds to purchase the land back as a quiet retreat. (The above covers the emergence and rise of Daoism.)
