> Under Emperor Renzong of the Song, Chan Master Tianboyuan bid farewell to Wen Yanbo, saying, "I am entering extinction; when the shrine is cremated, the smoke will be white." Yanbo held a lapis lazuli vase in his hand; the smoke entered the vase, and it was filled with śarīra. Under Emperor Shenzong, Chan Master Mingjiao Qisong died; when cremated, five things were not consumed: his nose, tongue, eyes, ear hair, and recitation beads. When Ouyang Xiu resided in Yingshang, he eschewed wine and meat dishes; when near death, he borrowed the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, and upon reading to the eighth fascicle, he passed away. Wen Yuke said to Cui Gongdu, "The sūtra says: 'For one who does not speak falsely, the tongue covers the face.'" He then stuck out his tongue reaching to his eyebrows, folded it three times, bathed, put on his cap and belt, sat upright, and passed away. Zhao Bian asked Chan Master Zhongyuan about the essential of the mind; upon hearing the sound of thunder, he had an open and great awakening; that year a great star fell in his courtyard, and he passed away sitting cross-legged. Under Emperor Huizong, when Su Shi was dying in Piling, Qian Jiming asked him, "Sir, you studied Buddhism throughout your life; how is it now?" Shi said, "I do not even accept such words," and then passed away. Under Emperor Gaozong, Empress Dowager Wei established Yanxiang Abbey and relocated Dharma Master Yuan to Manaopo; the pottery vessels \[contained\] uncountably many śarīra. Under Emperor Xiaozong, Assistant Administrator Qian Duanli inquired about the Way with Chan Master Yuan; falling slightly ill, he said to Chan Master Ji, "Earth, water, fire, and wind have temporarily converged," whereupon he closed his eyes and passed away.
