> In the past, the King of Wu-Yue requested posthumous titles for the various patriarchs, but the three masters—Nāgārjuna, Master of Beiqi, and Master of Nanyue—were not reached for titles. Now, taking those below Dharma Master Sui who do not have master titles, I extract their actual deeds directly from the texts of the Basic Annals to serve as honourable titles. This indeed embodies the great principle of honouring the patriarchs. If in future days someone is able to examine their virtuous deeds and submit them to the pure court to be granted illustrious posthumous titles, they should fortunately employ these established names, and they will likely not deviate from the reality. If anyone doubts private posthumous conferrals of this sort: in the Han, Zhu Mu's disciples together with Cai Yong conferred the title 'Master Wenzhong'; in the Jin, Tao Qian's disciples conferred the title 'Master Jingjie' (seen in the Book of Han and History of the Song); in the Tang, Xiao Yingshi's disciples conferred the title 'Master Wenyuan' (Zhao Lin's Yinhualu); and Yuan Yanzu was posthumously titled 'Great Master' (he was the father of Yuan Jie). These were all private titles conferred by disciples, without fault.
