> The eleventh patriarch, the Venerable of Utmost Practice, Guangxiu, was surnamed Liu, a native of Xiakun in Dongyang. Early on, he entered Master Daosui's room, intensively investigating the doctrine and contemplation, and turned his mind to utmost practice. Daily he recited the \*Lotus Sūtra\*, the \*Vimalakīrti\*, the \*Suvarṇaprabhāsa\*, the \*Brahmajāla\*, and the \*Four-Part Vinaya\* prātimokṣa text as his regular practice. Performing repentance during the six periods of the day, he grew all the more earnest in his later years. Each year he practiced the samādhi of following one's own thought for seven times seven days, never abandoning it on account of worldly affairs. Wei Heng, the governor of Tiantai, who had always revered the doctrinal lineage, invited him into the commandery hall to lecture on the \*Zhiguan\*. On the spot, Heng had a profound awakening; of those who gathered to listen at that time, none did not rejoice. On the sixteenth day of the second month in the third year of Huichang (under Emperor Wuzong of the Tang), he passed away in the Chan Grove. His entire body was interred at the Bodhimaṇḍa of the Golden Ground. The disciples who entered his gate were very numerous; the foremost was named Wuwai. Twenty-three years later, his disciples Liangxu and Jingwen opened the stūpa and cremated him, obtaining more than a thousand grains of relic, large as beans; they erected a stūpa at the original site to enshrine them.
