> Chan Master Fayan was of the Zhang clan from Qinghe. In the seventh year of the Dajian era of the Chen dynasty, he attended on Zhiyi at Tiantai and received the purport of dhyāna. He sat silently in the forest and did not reside in buildings; he often entered absorption for seven days before arising. Zhiyi confirmed him, saying, 'What you describe is the mark of the second contemplation among the contemplations of the eight liberations.' Mountain spirits repeatedly disturbed and tested him, but he remained tranquil and unmoved, dedicating himself exclusively to the cultivation of Chan methods. For more than thirty years, he constantly sat and never lay down. On the last day of the second month in the seventh year of the Daye era of the Sui dynasty, he passed away sitting cross-legged at Guoqing.
