> Second, hungry ghosts (pretas): Five hundred yojanas beneath Rājagṛha there is a city of hungry ghosts named Yellow-White, also named Pale and Dismal. The king of those ghosts is called Dharmarāja Yama, residing together with thirty-six kinds of retinues. Their classes are four: first, those with external obstacles; second, those with internal obstacles; third, those with obstacles to food and drink; fourth, those for whom food and drink are obstructed. As for the first, those with external obstacles, they cannot even hear the sounds of food and drink. As for the second, those with internal obstacles, when they obtain a tiny bit of food or drink, their mouths are like the eye of a needle and it cannot enter; even if it can enter the mouth, their throats are like horsehairs and nothing can pass through; even if it passes through the throat, their bellies are like vast mountain valleys and cannot be filled; and even if their bellies are filled, their shanks are like stalks of grass and they cannot move, thus undergoing such great suffering. As for the third, those with obstacles to food and drink, whenever they see food and drink, immeasurable hell-wardens wielding various weapons guard them, so that they obtain nothing. As for the fourth, those for whom food and drink are obstructed, whenever they eat food or drink, karmic retribution causes iron pellets and molten bronze to be poured into their mouths, flowing out from below. Such four kinds are all hungry ghosts. Regarding their lifespan: one month in the human world is one day and night for them; reckoned in this manner, their lifespan is five hundred years, which corresponds to fifteen thousand years in the human realm. Or they dwell in the human realm in charnel grounds and similar places, eating blood, flesh, and the like; these are all kinds of hungry ghosts.
