> (5) In this year, Wei Yuansong submitted a memorial to reduce the number of monks. Previously, Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou revered Buddhism. In the sixth year of Tianbao, Yuansong submitted eleven articles to abolish monasteries and reduce monks, saying: "Monks are mostly lazy and idle, greedy for wealth and scrambling for gain, and not worthy of reverence and esteem." The emperor summoned one hundred monks into the Inner Bodhimanda. For seven days they watched for faults but found none. Soon thereafter, the matter was dropped. Yuansong later contracted a foul disease and died. The Bhagavān said: "Worms in the lion's own body"—how does this not apply to Yuansong?
