> (29) In winter, Emperor Yang performed sacrifices at the Southern Suburb. He decreed that Buddhist monks and Daoists alike should perform prostrations in the manner of the laity. The Daoists dared not object, but the bhikṣus uniformly refused to comply with the edict. The emperor interrogated them, saying, "The terms of the decree were promulgated long ago; why do you stubbornly refuse to obey the command?" At that time, Dharma Master Mingzhan replied, "If Your Majesty requires us to abandon the Way in accordance with regulations, our humble persons would not dare disobey the command. But if you recognize that the Great Dharma should be revered, then under the monastic robes, monks have no etiquette of paying homage to the worldly." The emperor said, "Why did you prostrate to Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou?" Zhan replied, "Emperor Wu of the Zhou relied on intimidation and gave free rein to tyranny, practicing neither benevolence nor virtue; he is not worthy to serve as a model for a ruler of a state. Your Majesty's sage governance is purely benevolent and does not unjustly punish the innocent; hence this poor monk is able to exhaust his loyal words." The emperor fell silent and dropped the matter. The officials considered Zhan to have defied the emperor and intended to convict him of an offense. Zhan said, "The one who is culpable is Zhan alone; I hope that you will not impose uncanonical punishment upon my fellows." The emperor admired his unyielding nature and did not prosecute him. Deliberations concerning paying homage to the ruler ceased from this point onward.
