Dingmao \[607 CE\]) Yang Hong, magistrate of Shiping, led Daoists and renowned Confucians into Zhizang Temple to inaugurate an assembly on the meaning of the teachings. Jing said, 'When followers of the Dao enter a temple, in principle there is host and guest; how can you go first?' If its essence is one and therefore confused, then at the very time of confusion it had already of itself formed one; this would mean that the "one" was not produced by the Dao. If its essence is different and therefore confused, then before it was confused it had already of itself formed two; this would mean that the "two" did not arise from the "one".'
