> Huayan Dharma Master Fashun passed away. Shun was born into the Du clan and was also called Du Shun; he was a clan elder of Du Ruhui. A native of Wannian in Chang'an, he was born in the second year of the Yongding era of the Chen dynasty. In his youth, he was esteemed by Emperor Wen of Sui, who supplied him with a monthly stipend to support him. If there was someone sick, the master would sit upright facing them, and in a short while they would recover. Or if someone was born deaf, Shun would call them and speak with them, and their ears would immediately become sharp. Or if someone was born mute, Shun would go to them and talk, and upon awakening they could speak. Or if someone was manic and insane, Shun would have someone hold them, sit in dhyāna facing them for a short time, and the person would bow in thanks and leave. Once, approaching a stream, his attendants feared it could not be crossed; Shun led them across together, and the water immediately stopped flowing. His miraculous signs were mostly of this sort, yet Shun was serene and never took them to heart. He was especially profound in the Huayan doctrine. The Emperor had always revered him and once invited him into the imperial palace to usher in auspicious qi; consorts, princesses, imperial in-laws, and various nobles revered him like a living Buddha. He compiled the Huayan Fajie Guanmen (Contemplations of the Huayan Dharmadhātu), and his disciple, the Venerable Zhiyan, transmitted his teaching.
