> (Bingxu \[ninth year of Wude, 626 CE\]) In the ninth year, Fu Yi, Grand Astrologer, submitted memorials requesting the abolition of the Buddhist teachings seven times in total; his wording was vehement and intense. The Emperor, advanced in years, was gentle and indecisive, and was quite inclined to believe him. He submitted his memorials to the assembly of officials for mixed deliberation. The high ministers all said: "The Buddha Dharma has flourished through successive dynasties; it promotes goodness, checks evil, and invisibly aids the state. In principle, it should not be discarded." Only Zhang Daoyuan, Minister of the Imperial Stud, allied with Yi and praised his memorial as being reasonable. The Chief Minister Xiao Yu rebuked Yi at court, saying: "The Buddha is a sage! Fu Yi raises this argument: 'He who denies the sages possesses no law.' I request that he be placed under severe punishment!" Yi said: "Ritual is rooted in serving one's parents and culminates in serving one's sovereign; in this, the ritual of loyalty and filiality is manifested, and the way of minister and son is fulfilled. The Buddha scaled the city wall and underwent pravrajyā, fleeing and turning his back on his father; as a common fellow he defied the Son of Heaven, and as an heir to the lineage he rebelled against his parents. Xiao Yu did not emerge from a hollow mulberry tree, yet he conversely venerates a fatherless teaching! I have heard: 'He who denies filiality has no parents.' This refers to Xiao Yu!" Yu said: "Hell was established precisely for this man!" (The above is found in the Old History of the Tang).
