> (16) On the fifth day of the second month, the Dharma Master Xuanzang fell ill. He commanded his disciple Dacheng Guang to record the translated scriptures and treatises, totaling 1,335 fascicles, and to make ten koṭis of Maitreya statues. As his illness grew critical, he chanted with his mouth: "The form aggregate is ungraspable; feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are ungraspable; the eye element is ungraspable, up to the mind-consciousness element being ungraspable; ignorance is ungraspable, up to bodhi being ungraspable; even that which is ungraspable is ungraspable." He then commanded those at his side to chant three times in unison: "Namo to the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha Maitreya. May I, together with all sentient beings, swiftly behold your compassionate countenance. Namo to the Inner Court where the Tathāgata Maitreya resides. May I, upon relinquishing this life, be surely reborn therein." He then peacefully lay on his right side and passed away, at the age of sixty-three. That evening, four bands of white rainbow stretched from north to south, piercing the Jing constellation directly above the pagoda of Cien Monastery. When the report reached the court, the Emperor wept for him with great sorrow, and looking to his attendants said: "I have lost the treasure of the realm!" He suspended court for three days. From the passing to the burial, he issued imperial edicts five times, compiling the bequeathed scriptures and showing diligent solicitude for the funeral arrangements. Shortly thereafter, an extraordinary monk arrived holding sandalwood powder incense, requesting to anoint the Dharma Master's body according to the Indian method. Dacheng Guang and others, because the niche had been closed for many days, did not wish to open it. That monk said: "I have received a special imperial decree; if I am refused, I shall report it at once." Thereupon, they opened the niche: his complexion was as if alive, and the fragrance was dense and rich. When the monk finished anointing, he vanished in an instant. Those who understood considered him to be a person from the Tuṣita Inner Court. In the fourth month of summer, an imperial decree followed the ancient precedent of the World-Honoured Buddha, encasing him in a gold inner coffin and a silver outer coffin, and building a pagoda at the East Gate of Chan. His disciples Shentai, Xixuan, Huiyin, Huili, Mingjun, Yibao, Dacheng Guang, and others were all dragon-elephants of the Dharma gate.
