> (19; wuchen) The era was changed to Zongzhang. An imperial edict assembled monks and Daoists at Bai Fu Hall to determine the authenticity of the Huahu jing (Scripture of Laozi Converting the Barbarians), with the hundred officials witnessing it. The monk Faming, having been chosen in advance, entered. When the leaders of the three teachings were in turbulent debate, Ming, seeing that it was false, pushed through the crowd and stepped forward, saying: "When Laozi converted the barbarians into Buddhas, did he use the Chinese tongue to convert them, or did he use the barbarian tongue to entice them? If he used the Chinese tongue, the barbarians would not have understood; he must have used the barbarian tongue. Since it was transmitted to this land, it must have relied on translation. I wonder, as for what you Daoists call the Huahu jing, in what dynasty was it translated? And who served as the scribe and certifier of meaning?" Thereupon the entire assembly was struck dumb, and none could answer. The dukes, ministers, and assembled officials all submitted to its incisiveness, and dispersed in high spirits. An edict was issued to gather all copies of the Huahu jing throughout the realm to be burned and discarded, excluding them from the Daoist canon. Soon after, Huan Yandao and others of Hengdao Daoist Abbey in Luoyang submitted a memorial begging that it be kept. The edict replied: "The Three Sages renewed their brilliance, and the Xuanyuan \[Emperor Laozi\] traced our genealogy; how could we forget the teachings of Laozi and lean in favor toward the Buddhist school? Our intention is truly to return to simplicity, and our heart is set on discarding falsehood. What violates principle and distorts affairs, though it be close to us, shall still be eliminated; what accords with righteousness and corresponds to names, though it be wronged, must certainly be recorded. From now on, in all sections of Daoist scriptures, any that record matters concerning the conversion of the barbarians should be excised completely. The authorities shall enact penal regulations \[for violators\]."
