> Emperor Gaozong passed away in this year. After Emperor Zhongzong had been on the throne for several months, the Empress of Heaven deposed him as the Prince of Luling and confined him to Fangzhou. The Empress of Heaven attended court and took charge of the government; she is known as Zetian. In the seventh month of the following year, ten śramaṇas went to the palace to present the Dayun jing, loudly proclaiming that Zetian ought to ascend the imperial throne. Zetian was greatly delighted. She bestowed upon the ten śramaṇas purple square robes and silver tortoise-bags, circulated the scripture to all the commanderies and realms throughout the empire, and had a Dayun Monastery built in each. In the ninth month, Zetian reformed the mandate of the Tang, changed the name of the state to Zhou, and styled herself the Holy and Divine Emperor.
