> The appraisal says: Dharma Master Zhi Dun said, 'A śramaṇa's relation to the world is like an empty boat drifting across a vast abyss. When he arrives, it is not on account of worldly affairs; when he withdraws, he also avails himself of leisure. Within the four seas, he has no home of his own. If the realm falls into chaos, he shakes his staff and roams alone; if the Way prevails, he gathers joyfully with others.' This means that those among our fellowship are truly persons of no worldly business. But when it comes to those of the degenerate age who corrupt the Way and merely seek comfort in food and clothing, regarding Duke Di of Liang's critique, one can hardly conceal it. Alas, how could this be the doing of true śramaṇas? The memorial stated: 'The Tathāgata established his teachings with the intention of universally delivering all kinds of beings; how could he exhaust the people merely to sustain empty embellishments?' This not only corrected the errors of Empress Wu Zetian, but also assisted the correct teaching of our Buddha. It is as far apart as clouds and mud from those later generations who indiscriminately attacked Buddhism and Daoism merely to seek fame.
