> (\[Year\] 38) The wonder-working monk Wanhui entered the palace. He was bestowed the title Lord Fayun and lodged in the Academy of Scholarly Worthies, with two beautiful maidens assigned to serve him. Soon after, he suddenly asked for river water from Wenshang. His attendants were frantic, unable to procure it. He then said: 'Just dig a hole in the ground in front of the hall, and it can be obtained.' Once it was obtained, Wanhui drank the water and then calmly passed away. He was posthumously granted the title Duke of the Realm, and his portrait was painted in the Academy of Scholarly Worthies. Earlier, when Wanhui was young, he was able to deliver a letter to his elder brother three thousand li away, departing in the morning and returning in the evening; hence he was called Wanhui ('Ten-Thousand-Return'). Emperor Gaozong heard of his fame and summoned him into the palace, having him ordained as a śramaṇa. When Zetian was on the throne, she brought him into the inner court, bestowed brocade robes upon him, and ordered palace women to attend him. When Crown Prince Zhuanghui was first born, Zetian held him and showed him to Wanhui. Wanhui said: 'This is a tree spirit from the Western Regions; raising him will be beneficial to his brothers.' Later, when Princess Anle relied on Empress Wei and was plotting treason, Wanhui encountered her, looked at her dust, spat, and said: 'She smells of blood; she must not be approached.' Soon after, Anle was indeed executed. When Xuanzong was still in his feudatory domain, he once privately visited Wanhui. Wanhui patted his back and said: 'The Son of Heaven of fifty years of peace.' Whenever Ruizong, as the Prince of Xiang, was about to go out, Wanhui would always tell the marketplace people: 'The Son of Heaven is coming.' A moment later, the Prince of Xiang would arrive. His supernatural anomalies were all of this kind. He showed quiescence in Liquan Ward of Chang'an at the age of seventy-four.
