> An appraisal says: Lord Fayun once had a verse that went: 'Forgetting both light and dark, the Buddha eye opens; / Unbound by a single phenomenon, one emerges from the lotus clump. / True emptiness does not destroy the nature of numinous wisdom; / Wondrous function is ever present in effortless merit. / Sacred wisdom originally accomplishes the Buddha path; / Tranquil light, without shining, is naturally all-penetrating.' Savoring its purport thoroughly, these are truly words of Mahāyāna complete awakening! Yet Fayun specifically manifested transformations through Hīnayāna supernatural anomalies. When Buddhas and bodhisattvas appear in the world to propagate the true Dharma eye, they invariably contain their light and blend with the world, never leaking the secret mechanism until, facing the end of life, they finally give their entrustment. Thus, was Fayun's overt display of marvels perhaps an expedient means of sages and worthies?
