> (45. Gengxu \[710 CE\]) In the third month of this year, an imperial decree commanded Wei Anshi, the Regent of the Eastern Capital, to deliver an imperial edict summoning the Śramaṇa Yixing of Mount Song to proceed to the palace. Yixing declined on the pretext of illness and did not go, fleeing into Mount Dangyang in Jingzhou. The Old Tang History states: Yixing's surname was Zhang, and his original name was Sui. He was the grandson of Gongjin, Duke of Tanguo, and the son of Shan, Magistrate of Wugong. In his youth, he was intelligent and perceptive, widely reading the masters and histories. He once went to the Daoist priest Yin Chong to borrow the Taixuan jing to read. He returned it after a few days. Chong said, "This scripture is subtle and profound; I have researched it for many years and still do not understand it. You ought to study it carefully and not treat it lightly." Yixing said, "I have already investigated its principles." He then produced the Taiyan xuan tu (Profound Diagram of the Great Extension) and his explanations of the meanings that he had composed. Chong read it in great astonishment, and thereupon discussed its deep mysteries with him. Afterward, he said to others, "This young man is a Yanzi." From this, he became renowned in the world. Earlier, Wu Sansi admired his learning and conduct and approached him seeking to form an acquaintance. Yixing fled into hiding to avoid him. Soon he went forth into the monastic life and traveled everywhere throughout the empire seeking unusual arts. Arriving at Guoqing Monastery on Mount Tiantai, he saw several tens of ancient pines in a separate courtyard, and running water before the gate. Yixing stood by the screen of the gate and heard the sound of a monk laying out counting rods in the courtyard, who said to his disciples, "Today a disciple should come from afar to seek my calculating methods. He should already have arrived at the gate; is there no one to guide him in?" He immediately removed one rod and said, "The water before the gate should flow westward, and the disciple will also have arrived." Yixing looked back at the stream water, and it had indeed flowed westward. Thereupon, taking him at his word, he hurriedly entered, bowed twice, and inquired about his methods. That monk fully imparted them to him. He thereupon thoroughly mastered the study of celestial phenomena, yin and yang, and calendar reckoning. Returning to Mount Song, he relied on Chan Master Puji to examine and determine the fundamental tenets of the Chan gate. When he fled to Mount Dangyang, he also studied the vinaya under Vinaya Master Huiwu. Whenever he looked once over any scripture or book, he never forgot it for the rest of his life.
