> (Jiazi, fifty-seven) The monk Niuyun was not intelligent in his youth. Because of this, he went to Wutai Shan to pay homage to Mañjuśrī. When he first arrived at the Eastern Terrace, he saw an old man who asked, "Why have you come?" He replied, "I only wish to see the Great Sage and seek intelligence." The old man said, "Mañjuśrī resides at the Northern Terrace; you should go and see him." Yun obeyed the instruction and hurried to the Northern Terrace, where the old man was already present. Yun suspected that he was indeed Mañjuśrī, and thereupon bowed to him. The old man said, "You are a monk; you should not bow to a layman." Yun bowed unceasingly. The old man took pity on him and entered samādhi to observe Yun's past life, which had in fact been an ox; because it had once carried scriptures with haste, it obtained the recompense of becoming a bhikṣu. The old man arose from samādhi and told this to Yun, adding, "Your nature is dull and bewildered, and there is stagnant flesh in your chest. I should hoe it away for you." Thereupon he cautioned Yun to close his eyes and not open them at all. Yun complied with the agreement. He distinctly felt the old man hoeing at his chest with a mattock, yet it was not very painful. In a short while, his heart opened wide, suddenly different from former times. When he opened his eyes, he saw the old man manifest his body as Mañjuśrī, wondrously featured and dignified, who said to Yun, "I have finished granting you intelligence." Yun leaped with joy and made obeisance; when he arose, Mañjuśrī had vanished. From then on, Yun possessed total dhāraṇī retention and discerning awakening, becoming a guide of the era. Because of his past karma, he was called "Niuyun" (Ox Yun).
