Bodhiruci was the son of a king of South India; he yielded the throne and went forth from the household life. Emperor Gaozong heard of his fame and issued an imperial decree inviting him, so he arrived at the capital during the Chuigong reign era (685–688). Over a total of forty years, works such as the Avataṃsaka and Ratnakūṭa Sūtras were all translated by his hand. The Emperor and heavy ministers revered him as a living Buddha. On the day of his burial, an imperial guard of honour and ceremonial regalia were specially provided, and a stūpa was erected on the western plateau of Longmen. He was posthumously granted the title "Tripiṭaka Master of the Kaiyuan Era, Omniscient One."
