> \[32, yiyou\] Yang Taizhen was installed as Noble Consort (Guifei). The Daoist Wu Yun was summoned to an audience in the Datong Hall this year. The Emperor asked about the essentials of the Dao. He replied: 'For those who go deep into the Dao, none surpasses Laozi's five thousand characters; the rest are mere waste of paper and brush.' The Emperor further asked about the immortals' methods of alchemy and cultivation. He replied: 'These are matters for rustic hermits, sought over accumulated years; they are not what a ruler of men should turn his mind to.' Whenever Yun expounded, he spoke of the teachings of propriety and worldly affairs, criticizing the Son of Heaven through subtle words. The realm held him in high esteem. The śramaṇas were jealous of his favor, and Gao Lishi, who had always served the Buddha, joined in speaking ill of Yun to the Emperor. Yun, knowing he could not remain, took leave and returned to the mountains. An edict was issued to build a Daoist abbey for him. Later he moved to Maoshan and died in Shan county of Kuaiji. Because Yun was originally disliked by Lishi and rejected, his writings deeply reviled the Buddhists. Commentators criticized him for his partiality. At that time, Chen Shaoyou, Surveillance Commissioner of Western Zhejiang, greatly abhorred what Yun had done; he consequently ordered Dharma Master Shenyong to compose a treatise refuting him. Yong composed the \*Fanmi lun\* (Treatise on Dispelling Delusion) to correct his errors, and Yun's treatise was subsequently discredited. Dou Shao, Supervising Secretary, saw Yong's treatise and sighed, saying: 'Yong may truly be called a maṇi-jewel beyond the dust, a lion among treatises!'
