> (33 \[804 CE\]) In this year, Master Ning of Shengshan Temple in the Eastern Capital passed away. Bai Juyi of the Hanlin Academy composed 'Gāthās on the Eight Gradual Steps' to mourn him. His preface said: 'Juyi once sought the essentials of mind from the Master, and the Master favored me with his instructions, saying: Contemplation, Awakening, Concentration, Wisdom, Illumination, Penetration, Deliverance, and Renunciation. Thereupon they entered my ears and pierced my heart. Alas! Now the Master's retribution-body has transformed, but the Master's eight words do not transform. How supreme are these eight words! They are truly the gradual portal to the contemplation of the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas. Therefore, from Contemplation through Renunciation, I praise them in sequence, expanding one word into one gāthā, calling them the "Gāthās on the Eight Gradual Steps." This is intended to unfold the Master's teaching of the mind and to make clear that Juyi dares not let it fall into neglect.' Thereupon he mounted the hall, bowed before the couch, knelt, and after chanting and weeping, took his leave. The gāthās said: / Contemplation: / 'With the eye within the mind, / Contemplate marks outside the mind: / From where do they arise? / From where do they vanish? / Contemplating them again and again, / One distinguishes the real from the false.' / Awakening: / 'Only the real is ever-present, / Yet it is shrouded by the false; / If the real and false are distinguished, / Awakening arises therein; / Not apart from false existence, / One attains true emptiness.' / Concentration: / 'If the real is not destroyed, / The false will not arise; / The source of the six sense-faculties / Is serene as still water: / This is meditative concentration, / Which liberates from birth and death.' / Wisdom: / 'Concentrating solely on stillness, / Stillness still entails attachment; / Remedy it with wisdom, / For wisdom has no obstruction: / Like a pearl upon a tray, / As the tray moves, the pearl darts freely.' / Illumination: / 'Concentration and wisdom unite; / Once united, illumination follows, / Shining upon the myriad things, / Leaving no form unreflected: / Like a great round mirror, / Responding without personal feeling.' / Penetration: / 'When wisdom culminates, illumination comes; / Illumination means no obscuration. / When illumination culminates, penetration comes; / Penetration means no obstruction. / What is unobstructedness? / Transformation at complete ease.' / Deliverance: / 'Penetrating power is not constant; / It transforms according to the thought. / The two marks are nonexistent, / Yet manifest according to the quest: / This is great compassion, / Saving ten thousand through one.' / Renunciation: / 'Once the myriad sufferings are delivered, / Great compassion too is renounced; / Since suffering is not real, / Compassion is also provisional: / Therefore, among sentient beings, / Truly none are delivered.'
