> (15) Dharma Master Zhixuan's awakening and understanding were peerless, and he wrote many works. Yet he had few disciples. He therefore abandoned lecturing and lived at Hengyue Monastery. Every time he read what he had written, he would invariably sigh three times in admiration, thinking, 'My comprehensive understanding is like this, yet I meet no one who appreciates my tune.' By chance one day, a senior elder arrived, borrowed Zhixuan's writings, and read them. He then said, 'Your understanding is exceedingly lofty and accords quite well with the Buddha's intention. That you now lack a following is merely because you lack karmic affinity with people. Even a Buddha cannot deliver those without affinity; how much less can a beginner? You may prepare food and give it to the flying and running beasts; twenty years from now, you will naturally have a following.' As soon as he spoke, he vanished in a blur. Zhixuan then followed his instructions, sold his robes and single mat to buy rice, cooked it, and scattered it in the outskirts. Moved by this, flocks of birds gathered in large numbers, snatched the rice, and flew away. Zhixuan prayed over them, saying, 'May those who eat my rice become my companions in the Dharma.' Twenty years later, Zhixuan went to Yecheng to lecture. Beneath his seat was a crowd of more than a thousand people; indeed, they were all young bhikṣus.
