> (30) In this year, on the fifth day of the tenth month, the prefect Liu Zongyuan passed away. Zongyuan, courtesy name Zihou, was a native of Hedong. In his youth he was keen and sharp, thoroughly understanding everything. In composing literature he was outstanding and exquisite; the contemporaries of his cohort looked up to him. He passed the Broad Learning and Grand Composition examination and was repeatedly promoted to Probational Investigating Censor. He was on good terms with Wang Shuwen. When Shuwen fell into disgrace, Zongyuan was demoted to Administrative Aide of Yongzhou. Living in leisure, he exerted himself all the more, devoting himself to reading and literary composition; his thoughts surged and gathered into profound breadth without shores, and he freely roved amidst the mountains and streams for ten years in all. He was summoned back to serve as the prefect of Liuzhou. His friend Liu Yuxi was assigned to Bozhou. Zongyuan said, 'Bozhou is no fit place for a human being to dwell, and Yuxi's mother is elderly; I cannot bear to see him brought to ruin.' He immediately drew up a memorial wishing to yield Liuzhou to Yuxi and go to Bozhou himself. It happened that high ministers also petitioned on Yuxi's behalf, so his post was changed to Lianzhou instead. The people of Liu used their sons and daughters as collateral for loans; if they failed to redeem them on time, they were confiscated into servitude as slaves. Zongyuan devised plans and redeemed them all, returning them to their families. Scholars of the south traveled thousands of li to associate with Zongyuan; those who received his instruction all had exemplary models for their literary compositions. The world called him Liu of Liuzhou. He died at the age of forty-seven. Facing the end, he wrote letters to all his friends, entrusting his affairs after death. His collected writings comprise thirty-three fascicles. Han Yu once praised him, saying, 'In heroic depth and elegant strength he resembles Sima Zijian; Cui and Cai are not worth much by comparison.' After his death, the people of Liu cherished his memory; his spirit descended in the rear hall of the prefecture, and a shrine was accordingly built at Luochi, where animal offerings are made down to the present day.
