> (Sixteenth year) In the tenth month of this year, Chan Master Sheng of Yunyan in Tanzhou passed away. He was a native of Jianchang in Zhongling, with the secular surname Wang. In his youth, he went forth from household life at Shimen. Initially, he studied under Baizhang but did not realize the profound meaning, serving him for twenty years. When Baizhang passed away, he visited Yaoshan and served him diligently for a long time. Yaoshan asked, "Master, what are you doing?" He said, "Carrying manure." Yaoshan asked, "Where is that one?" He said, "Here." Yaoshan said, "For whose sake do you go back and forth?" He said, "I act on his behalf east and west." Yaoshan said, "Why not have him walk alongside you?" He said, "Upādhyāya, do not slander him." Yaoshan said, "You should not speak like that." He said, "How should I speak?" Yaoshan said, "Have you ever carried it?" At these words, the master accorded and understood. One day, Yaoshan asked, "I hear that you know how to perform the lion dance; is that so?" He said, "It is." Yaoshan asked, "How many acts can you perform?" He said, "I can perform six acts." Yaoshan said, "I can perform it too." He asked, "How many acts can the Upādhyāya perform?" Yaoshan said, "I can perform one act." The master said, "One is six; six is one." Later, he went to Guishan. Guishan asked him, "I understand that when the elder was at Yaoshan, you performed the lion dance; is that so?" He said, "It is." Guishan said, "Do you perform it constantly, or is there a time when you set it aside?" He said, "When I want to perform, I perform; when I want to set it aside, I set it aside." Guishan asked, "When you set it aside, where is the lion?" The master said, "Set aside! Set aside!" Daowu asked, "What about the thousand hands and eyes of Great Compassion?" He said, "It is like reaching for a pillow in the dark without a lamp. How do you understand it?" Daowu said, "I understand! I understand!" The master said, "How do you understand it?" Daowu said, "The whole body is hands and eyes." Dongshan asked, "I beg an eye from the Master." The master said, "To whom did you give yours?" He said, "Liangjie does not have one, Master." He said, "If you had one, where would you place it?" Dongshan was speechless. The master asked, "Is the one begging for an eye an eye or not?" Liangjie said, "It is not an eye." The master scolded him. On the twenty-sixth day of this month, after bathing his body, the master summoned the managing monk and ordered him to prepare a feast, saying, "Tomorrow an elder will depart." Coming to the twenty-seventh day, no one departed at all; when night fell, the master entered stillness. His lifespan was sixty. When he was cremated, more than a thousand relics were obtained; his stupa was named Jingsheng, and he was posthumously bestowed the title Great Master Wuzhu. In the summer, in the sixth month, the Daoist priest Liu Xuanjing of Mount Heng was appointed Grand Master for Splendid Happiness and Scholar of the Institute for the Adoration of the Dao, and ordered to reside in the forbidden palace with Zhao Guizhen to cultivate the registers of the teachings. Liu Xuanmo, Rectifier of Omissions of the Left, submitted a memorial earnestly remonstrating; Xuanmo was demoted to Revenue Officer of Henan.
