> The eulogy of the Old Book of Tang says: "Your subject has heard elders speak of the historical precedents of the Dazhong era: Emperor Xianwen possessed profound capacity and insight; having endured hardships for a long time, he fully understood the sufferings of the human world. Ever since the Baoli era, eunuchs had usurped power, and state matters were often decided by them; the powerful and prominent in the capital greatly troubled the destitute populace. When Emperor Xianwen came to the throne, on the first day the powerful and overbearing withdrew their traces; on the second day treacherous ministers feared the laws; on the third day the palace eunuchs were cowed in spirit. Consequently, punishments and governance were not excessive, and the worthy and capable offered their service; the hundred offices and the chiefs of the four quarters were harmonious as a pure breeze. For over ten years, voices of praise filled the roadways. Within the palace, the Emperor wore washed clothes, and his ordinary meals did not exceed a few dishes. Unless his mother, the Empress Dowager, was attending the meal, music was never performed. If there was a minor famine in a year, worry showed upon his face. Even his personal attendants never saw an expression of indolence upon him. When speaking with his ministers, he received them solemnly and warmly as if facing honored guests; whenever anything was reported, he listened and received it with an open mind. According to past precedents, when the ruler traveled, the eunuchs would first spread borneol and saffron to cover the ground; Xianwen ordered all of this removed. When a palace woman fell ill and a physician examined her, once she recovered, he immediately drew out gold to reward the physician, warning: 'Do not let the imperial messengers know, lest they think I show favoritism to the attendant.' His reverence, frugality, and love of goodness were generally like this. In his final years, afflicted by wind-poison, he summoned the hermit of Mount Luofu, Xuanyuan Ji, to inquire into the essentials of cultivating the body. Ji was also a man of the Dao; he never spoke of the bizarre. The Emperor respected him all the more. When Ji firmly requested to return to the mountains, the Emperor said: 'Sir, you are leaving me in haste; if the state suffers calamity, how many years will I actually possess the realm?' Ji asked for a brush, wrote the number 'forty' horizontally, and departed; it signified fourteen years. Is the rise and fall of proper destiny truly like this? Yet the Emperor's Way and imperial virtue were without flaw from beginning to end; even Emperor Wen and Emperor Jing of the Han could not surpass him. It is regrettable that historical records have been lost, and not three or four tenths of the old events remain; moistening the ink and brandishing the brush, one feels a sense of regret."
