> Chan Master Daoqian of Yongming Temple in Hangzhou was a native of Hezhong Prefecture, surnamed Wu. At first, he paid his respects to Chan Master Jinghui of Linchuan, who marvelled at him at first sight and at once allowed him to enter his chamber. One day, Jinghui asked: "Besides attending \[discourses\] and asking questions, what scripture do you understand?" The Master said: "The Avataṃsaka Sūtra." Jinghui asked: "To which category do universality, particularity, identity, difference, integration, and disintegration belong?" The Master said: "The passage is found in the 'Ten Grounds Chapter'. According to principle, all mundane and supramundane dharmas possess the six characteristics." Jinghui said: "Does emptiness also possess the six characteristics, or not?" The Master was at a loss and had no answer. Jinghui said: "You ask me instead." The Master then asked: "Does emptiness also possess the six characteristics, or not?" Jinghui said: "Empty." Thereupon, the Master was awakened; leaping with joy, he bowed in gratitude. Jinghui asked: "How do you understand it?" The Master said: "Empty." Jinghui approved of him. On another day, when the fourfold assembly of men and women entered the courtyard, Jinghui asked the Master: "The Vinaya says: 'Hearing the sound of hairpins and bracelets through a wall is called breaking the precepts.' Seeing gold and silver mixed together, and vermilion and purple jostling in crowds—is it breaking the precepts or not?" The Master said: "What a fine entryway!" Jinghui said: "Hereafter, you will have five hundred wool-robed disciples and be revered by kings and marquises." Soon after, the Master bowed, took his leave, and halted his staff at an ancient temple in Quzhou, doing nothing other than reading the Tripiṭaka. King Zhongyi ordered him to enter the palace to receive the bodhisattva precepts, bestowed the title Chan Master Cihua Dinghui, built a great saṅghārāma called Huiri Yongming, and invited him to dwell there. The Master said: "I wish to invite the bronze images of the arhats beneath the pagoda to come over to the new temple to receive offerings." The king said: "Splendid! Last night, I dreamt that sixteen venerable ones begged to follow the Master into the temple. How could the miraculous response be like this!" He then added the two characters 'Yingzhen' (Arhat) to the Master's title. The Master sat at the great monastery of Yongming, constantly \[guiding\] an assembly of five hundred. The Master went up to the hall and said: "The Buddha Dharma is manifest; why then do you not understand it? If you senior monks wish to ask about the Buddha Dharma, just ask Zhang Three and Li Four. If you wish to understand worldly phenomena, then go investigate the monasteries of ancient buddhas. Nothing is the matter; do not stand for long." A monk asked: "'The Great Way is not difficult, using words to reveal the Way.' What are the words that reveal the Way?" The Master said: "Be especially careful to avoid selecting and picking." A monk asked: "What is the auspicious light of the Sun of Wisdom?" The Master said: "From here to Baoci is not far." The monk said: "In that case, I am directly favored with its illumination." The Master said: "I am glad that has no connection at all."
