> (17) The introduction states: The Zhu family of the Later Liang usurped the Tang. Traversing five dynasties, eight surnames, thirteen rulers, and fifty-three years, Duke Ouyang Wenzhong (Xiu) took the \*Spring and Autumn Annals\* as a model to compose the \*History of the Five Dynasties\*. In antiquity it was said that when the \*Spring and Autumn Annals\* was composed, rebellious ministers and treasonous sons were terrified. However, from the Qin and Han downwards, calamities arose within palace walls and upheavals broke out at close quarters; between ruler and minister, father and son, matters that one cannot bear to hear—why was there an increase in those who were not terrified? I have compared and collated the new and old \*Basic Annals\* of the Tang, and roughly perceived Duke Wenzhong's reverence for the \*Spring and Autumn Annals\*, with the subtlety of his exempla, historical recording, praise, and blame, which no other history could match. Thereupon I gathered several tens of points and composed one piece, the "Exempla of the Basic Annals of the New Tang History". When I obtained the \*History of the Five Dynasties\* and examined the intention he expressed for his writing, it also agreed quite well with my words. However, taking the work of exalting the king from the \*Spring and Autumn Annals\* to judge and correct the history of the Tang is fine; but to use it to bestow empty names and grand rituals, thereby dignifying and admiring the rulers of the Five Dynasties—is that not nearly an exercise in vain? Zhu Quanzhong assassinated Emperor Zhaozong and extinguished the Tang mandate; even the evil of Wang Mang and Liu Yao is insufficient to compare with it. When he possessed the state, fathers and sons slaughtered one another, no different from the death of dogs and swine. This is precisely the efficacy of cause and effect, of good and evil, in our teaching. Duke Wenzhong despised this and did not adopt it, merely borrowing the towering titles and court rituals of the \*Spring and Autumn Annals\* to adorn them, ultimately lacking a single word of deep condemnation or severe rebuke. When the loyal and upright of the world read it, how could it vent the indignation in their breasts? Duke Wang Wengong of Jing once lamented that Duke Wenzhong did not revise the \*Book of Jin\* but instead revised the \*History of the Five Dynasties\*. My words are indeed the meaning of Duke Wengong's lament. As for Li Keyong, Shi Jingtang, and Liu Zhiyuan, they were all of the barbarian stock of the Shatuo Turks. Zhu Quanzhong and Guo Wei were people of the Central Plains, yet conversely they were not as close to humanity as the three barbarians. Guo Wei replaced the Han, and his adopted son Shizong was quite renowned; yet critics view them only in broad terms and do not know the details.
