> (\[Year\] 19, wuchen \[908 CE\]) In the fifth month, Chan Master Xuefeng Yicun showed nirvāṇa. The master was a native of Quanzhou, with the secular surname Zeng. At seventeen, he shaved his head, and went to Youzhou to receive the full precepts (upasampadā). He toured Chan assemblies far and wide, and had a karmic accord with Deshan. During the Xiantong era, he ascended Mount Xianggu. Xuefeng founded a monastery, and practitioners of the profound flocked and gathered there. Emperor Yizong bestowed upon him the title "Grand Master Zhenjue". Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Holding up the mallet and raising the whisk do not belong to the ancestral vehicle. How does the Venerable One provide instruction?" The master raised his whisk. The monk held his head and ran out. The master paid no heed to him. Daofu asked, "As for the ancient worthies, was it not indeed a matter of mind transmitting mind?" The master said, "It also does not establish texts or phrases." Fu said, "If it does not establish texts or phrases, how does the master transmit it?" The master was silent for a long time. Fu bowed. The master said, "Would it not be good to ask me another turn?" Fu said, "I request a topic (huatou) from the Venerable One." The master said, "Is it only thus, or is there another deliberation?" \[Fu\] said, "For the Venerable One to be thus is quite sufficient." Changqing asked, "As for the one single path transmitted from the sages of old, I ask the master to deign to instruct us." The master remained silent. Changqing bowed and withdrew. The master smiled gently. The master sometimes said to the assembly, "Speak it grandly and intimately (tangtang mimidi)!" Fu came forward and asked, "What is grand and intimate?" The master stood up and said, "What are you saying?" Fu took a step back and stood. The master offered a word: "This matter can be so noble and honorable, so dense and continuous." Fu replied, "For several years since I arrived, I had not questioned how the Venerable One gave instruction." The master said, "Although I did not have it previously, I have it now. Does it hinder anything?" \[Fu\] said, "I would not dare say so. Such being the case, the Venerable One could not help doing so." The master said, "You have brought me to this." From this, Fu attained faith and entry. Once during communal labor, the master cited Guishan's words, 'Upon seeing form, one immediately sees mind,' and asked Fu, "Is there any fault or not?" Fu said, "For what purpose did the ancient say this?" The master said, "Even though it is so, I want to deliberate it with you." \[Fu\] said, "If so, then it is not as good as speaking." Fu then went off to hoe the ground. Once during communal labor, the master asked Jiaoran, "The ancient said, 'Who knew beneath the woven mat hat was originally the man of former sorrows?' What did the ancient mean?" Jiaoran tilted his bamboo hat to the side and said, "Whose words are these?" \[The master\] also asked, "One who upholds the sūtra can shoulder the Tathāgata." Ran then lifted the master onto the meditation bench. One day, while Shaoqing was following the master during walking meditation, he saw taro leaves moving. The master pointed to the moving leaves to show him. Qing said, "I am afraid." The master said, "It is something inside your own house; what are you afraid of?" From this, Shaoqing attained awakening. Hongtao of Anguo came to call upon the master. The master said, "Where have you come from?" \[Tao\] said, "Jiangxi." The master said, "Where did you see Bodhidharma?" \[Tao\] said, "I tell the Venerable One clearly." The master said, "What do you say?" Tao said, "Where have you been, Venerable One?" One day, seeing Tao, the master suddenly grabbed him and said, "The entire great earth is the gate of liberation! Grasping their hands and telling them to enter, they refuse to enter." \[Tao\] said, "The Venerable One cannot blame Hongtao." The master said, "Even though it is so, what can be done about the many venerable monks behind you?" Senior Monk Fu of Taiyuan called upon the master. After completing his bows, he stood to the right of the seat. As soon as the master looked at him, Fu stepped down to look at the administrators. On another day, the master saw Fu, pointed to the sun, and showed it to him. Fu waved his hands and walked out. The master said, "You do not approve of me." Fu said, "The Venerable One shakes his head, and I wag my tail. Where do I not approve of the Venerable One?" The master said, "Everywhere it must also be concealed." One day, when the assembly of monks gathered for the evening instruction, the master was lying in the middle. Fu said, "Within the jurisdiction of the five prefectures, only this Venerable One is somewhat capable." The master then got up and left. The master resided in Minchuan for more than forty years; the flourishing of his Dharma seat was preeminent throughout the realm, and his assembly consistently numbered not fewer than one thousand five hundred. Near his end, he went out on an excursion to Lantian and returned in the evening. Having finished bathing, he showed nirvāṇa in the middle of the night, at the age of eighty-seven.
