> (Gui-hai \[1023 CE\]) Renzong Zhen (the sixth son of Zhenzong; he ascended the throne by testamentary decree. His Majesty had obtained an imperial son late in life. When he was first born, he cried incessantly day and night. A Daoist came who could stop the crying; when summoned inside, he said, 'Do not cry, do not cry—how could this compare to not smiling back then?' Thereupon the crying stopped. This was because Zhenzong had once prayed to the Heavenly Sovereign for an heir and asked the host of immortals, 'Who should go?' None replied, except the Barefoot Immortal who smiled. He consequently descended to become the heir. In the palace he was fond of going barefoot, which was the proof of it. At thirteen he ascended the throne, and Empress Dowager Liu lowered the curtain to administer the government jointly. His great reign lasted forty-two years. He lived to the age of fifty-four and was buried in the Yongzhao Mausoleum).
