> (35) Chan Master Huayan Daolong: It is not known where he was from. In the early Zhihe reign, he traveled to the capital and lodged at Jingde Monastery. Every day he roamed and gazed about the city, often returning at the second drum watch. The gatekeeper rebuked him, but he did not reform. One evening he returned and could not get in, so he slept beneath the gate. Emperor Renzong dreamed that he came to the gate of Jingde Monastery and saw a dragon coiled on the ground; startled awake in the middle of the night, he sent an imperial envoy to go and look. It was just a monk soundly asleep and snoring repeatedly. Shaking him, the envoy startled him awake, asked his name, and returned to report to the throne. The Emperor asked, and on hearing his name was Daolong \["Way of the Dragon"\], was delighted and said: "An auspicious omen!" The next day he summoned him to the side hall to inquire into the ancestral principle. Daolong's replies to the throne were detailed and appropriate. The Emperor was greatly pleased and decreed that he be lodged in the Shaozhu Cloister of Great Xiangguo Monastery. Princes, dukes, and nobles vied to be the first wishing to see him; before Daolong had even washed his face and rinsed his mouth, outside his door shoes filled the ground. The Emperor composed verses in poetic exchange with him, messengers streaming along the road. At times he entered the palace to respond to queries and stayed overnight in the forbidden precinct, treated with exceptional honor. He was bestowed the title Chan Master Yingzhi Mingwu \["Responding to Imperial Command with Clear Awakening"\]. In his youth, Daolong served Venerable Che of Shimen, who personally transmitted to him the principles and secrets of Dongshan. Later he visited Venerable Lian of Guanghui. Guanghui was just about to shave his head and told Daolong to bring a stool. Guanghui said: "Man of the Way, I have a poem on the stool; listen to it." The poem went: "Set it down, and all is level and stable." Later, on an occasion when \[Daolong\] related the kōan through which he had awakened at Shimen, Hui said: "What Shimen showed you is like a hundred delicious delicacies—it just cannot satisfy a person's hunger. If later there is a stick of incense, I will not let it be divided between two ends and three strands; it must be burned for him." He therefore became Lian's heir. Daolong's character was generous and kind, free of boasting or self-praise; he conducted his mind with true compassion and universal reverence. When he died, his age was over eighty. In the height of summer he sat in peaceful composure; after seven days his hands and feet remained soft and supple. A stupa for his whole body was erected east of the monastery (the full account is as in his principal biography).
