> (Thirty-eight: Bingshen) In the sixth year of Zhenghe, Vinaya Master Yuanzhao, whose courtesy name was Zhanran, of Lingzhi Monastery in Qiantang, was a native of Yuhang from the Tang family. In his youth, he relied on Master Huijian of the Eastern Scripture Depository at Xiangfu to study the vinaya. Later he met Gongqian of Shenwu and studied the Tiantai doctrine and contemplation. He comprehensively investigated the various schools, taking the vinaya as the foundation. Furthermore, he received the bodhisattva precepts from Guangci; the light of the precepts manifested, and the sudden and gradual vinaya deportments were completely fulfilled. The Nanshan lineage was grandly revitalized. He constantly wore a hemp saṃghāṭī, carried a tin staff and an alms bowl, and begged for food in the marketplace. Yang Wuweai praised him, saying: 'Carrying the bowl he goes forth, carrying the bowl he returns; / The Buddha's words constantly abide in the four postures. / When he first entered the market, people did not recognize him; / In empty space there must be ghosts and spirits who know.' He presided over prefectural seats four times. In his later years, he resided at Lingzhi for thirty years, with his assembly always numbering several hundreds. He once said, 'To transform the present age, nothing surpasses lecturing and expounding; to bequeath to future generations, nothing surpasses writing books.' He composed various commentaries such as the Zichi, Jiyuan, Xingzong, Yingfa, Zhufa, and Bao'en, as well as subcommentaries on the Sixteen Contemplations and the Smaller Amitābha Sūtra, and several fascicles of the Shanding lüyi ben and the Zhiyuan ji. He styled himself Anrenzi ('Master of Peaceful Forbearance'). Ordering the recitation of the Samantabhadra-caryā-praṇidhāna, he passed away sitting cross-legged. He lived to sixty-nine, with fifty-one summer retreats.
