> (Thirty-nine) The Daoist Lin Lingsu was a native of Wenzhou, adept at magical arts. Through his thunder rites, he often wandered about without restraint in the region between Su, Bo, Huai, and Si, begging for food at various monasteries. The monks slighted him. Reaching Chuzhou, he engaged in a brawl with Huishe and sued in the government office. The vice-prefect Shi Zhong interrogated him, favored his quick eloquence, and later released him and lodged him in a guesthouse, inquiring into the arts of breathing, alchemy, and flying spirits. In the first month of the seventh year, Zhong brought him into the capital. Through the Daoist Xu Zhichang, he met Prime Minister Cai Jing. Jing presented him to the Emperor. Lingsu made extravagant claims, saying, 'In the heavens there is the Shenxiao Yuqing Palace ruled by the Longevity Sovereign Lord. His younger brother, the Qinghua Sovereign Lord, and he are both sons of the Jade Emperor. Below them are the Immortal Elder of the Left Origin and the Immortal Scribe of Punishments, Chu Hui, along with over eight hundred officials.' He claimed that the Emperor was the Great Longevity Sovereign Lord, Cai Jing was the Immortal Elder of the Left Origin, and he himself was Chu Hui. The Emperor gladly believed him, granted Lin the title of 'Feathered Guest of the Golden Gate', and built the Tongzhen Palace to house him. The Emperor styled himself 'Sovereign Emperor Lord of the Dao, Leader of the Teaching'. ○ In the second month, an imperial edict was issued, ordering that the grand Buddhist monasteries throughout the empire be converted into Shenxiao Yuqing Wanshou Palaces, and cloisters into Daoist abbeys, establishing images of the Longevity and Qinghua Sovereign Lords and instituting Daoist examinations. Before long, the incident of the Imperial Guards occurred. ○ In the fourth month, an imperial edict was issued to the Daoist Registry, which stated in brief: 'We are the eldest son of the Sovereign on High, the Sovereign Lord of Taixiao. Pitying China for being afflicted by the difficult-to-teach barbarians of Jin, We earnestly besought the Sovereign on High, wishing to become the ruler of men so that all under heaven might return to the correct Way. You officials may present a memorial enthroning Us as the Sovereign Emperor Lord of the Dao, Leader of the Teaching, to be used only within religious matters. Because the six thousand fascicles of the Buddhist canon contain evil discussions and slanderous words defaming the two teachings of Daoism and Confucianism, close ministers are commanded to examine them at the Daoist Registry, requisition them, and burn them.'
