> (9) By the power of the Eternal Heaven and the shelter of great good fortune, the decree of the Emperor: A subject serves his superior with loyalty and filial piety, prizing the sincerity of presenting advice; a superior treats his subject with ritual propriety and righteousness, valuing the constancy of his affection from beginning to end, viewing the day of death as though it were the years of life. The late Grand Master of Splendid Happiness and Grand Protection, Liu Bingzhong, explored heaven and humanity in his learning and penetrated past and present in his understanding. Profound and modest, he was steadfast in virtue; quiet and composed, he was free of vanity. Formerly attending Us in Our princely manor, We frequently heard his elevated discourses. Just when he was granted an audience three times, he earnestly presented a memorial of ten thousand words, intending to set the whole realm in peace and admonish the ruler against excessive killing. When We succeeded to the throne, you, Minister, contributed the most. Finding you truly accorded with Our mind, and We alone fully understood your intentions. All your undertakings were verified; there was no need to seek another. You served for thirty years without evading difficulties; you submitted several hundred earnest memorials, each hitting the mark of principle. As We were about to rely on Our veteran minister to jointly accomplish the manifold affairs of governance, who could have thought that august Heaven would fail to preserve this one elder? Whenever this is brought up, on what day could We forget it? Considering the prestige of a Grand Councillor, there should be an adornment for his subterranean tomb. We therefore confer this imperial decree, elevating you to the splendid rank of the first grade, bestowing royal robes as funerary garments, and placing you in the correct station of the Three Preceptors. We further add an illustrious title to truly answer your extraordinary merit. May your heroic spirit perceive Our grief and favor. You are posthumously conferred the title of Grand Tutor with the Privileges of the Three Excellencies, with the posthumous name Wenzhen. Let it be according to this. Zhiyuan 12th year, first month.
